Coolant itself is an engineered fluid. It provides freeze and boil protection, but it also contains additives designed to protect aluminum, seals, gaskets, water-pump components, and internal cooling passages from corrosion and deterioration.
Those additives do not remain effective indefinitely.
A proper cooling-system service involves more than simply adding coolant to the expansion tank. The correct coolant specification and mixture must be used, and the system should be inspected for leaks, deteriorated hoses, damaged fittings, expansion-tank concerns, and other visible problems.

A deteriorated hose or plastic fitting can fail unexpectedly. An overheating event can potentially damage gaskets, cylinder heads, or other expensive engine components.
