The transmission is one of the most complex and expensive assemblies in a modern European vehicle. Whether your car uses a traditional manual gearbox, torque-converter automatic, dual-clutch transmission, or Porsche PDK, the fluid inside it plays a critical role in lubrication, cooling, hydraulic operation, and long-term component protection.
Transmission service is not one universal procedure. The correct approach depends on the gearbox.
Older manual transmissions may require a relatively straightforward drain-and-fill service using the correct specification of gear oil or transmission fluid. Even then, fluid selection matters. Synchronizers, bearings, seals, and gear materials are designed around specific lubricant properties.
Modern automatic transmissions are substantially more complex. Depending on the application, service may involve draining and replacing fluid, replacing the transmission filter or an integrated filter pan, installing new sealing components, and filling the transmission according to a precise temperature-dependent procedure.
Dual-clutch transmissions, including BMW DCT systems, have their own service requirements. Porsche PDK transmissions are similarly sophisticated and may require specific fluids, filters, procedures, and service intervals depending on the application.

Fluid condition changes with mileage, heat cycles, friction, and contamination from normal internal wear. For vehicles being maintained for long-term ownership, Bavarian Werk Shop generally recommends considering transmission service around every 50,000 miles unless the specific manufacturer, transmission, operating conditions, or service history calls for a different interval.
Transmission maintenance should also be distinguished from transmission repair. If a vehicle is already experiencing slipping, harsh engagement, warning messages, abnormal noises, or significant shifting problems, diagnosis may be necessary before routine service is recommended.
