The cooling system maintains a narrow operating-temperature range while the engine produces enormous amounts of heat. Two of its most important components are the water pump and thermostat. When either begins to fail, the result can range from poor temperature control to an overheating event capable of causing serious engine damage.
The water pump circulates coolant through the engine, radiator, heater circuit, and related components. Depending on the vehicle, the pump may be mechanically or electrically driven. Modern BMWs in particular may use electronically controlled electric water pumps that can fail differently from traditional belt-driven designs.
The thermostat regulates coolant flow based on engine temperature. A thermostat that does not operate correctly can contribute to an engine running too hot, too cold, or experiencing inconsistent temperature regulation.
Symptoms vary by vehicle and failure mode. A driver may notice a warning message, elevated temperature, reduced engine power, coolant leakage, poor heater performance, cooling fans operating abnormally, or stored diagnostic faults. In other cases, deterioration may be identified during inspection before a major symptom occurs.
